Gastroesophageal reflux disease(or GERD) is a type of is a digestive disorder that affects the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is the ring of muscle that stops stomach acid from regurgitating back up into the throat. GERD is a form of acid reflux, which affects millions of people all over the world. Acid reflux refers to too much acid that forms in the stomach, which can cause complications and symptoms that are related to heartburn.
However, an effective way to reduce the amount of heartburn that someone experiences is by making sure that the individual is consuming the necessary foods to combat acid reflux. When acid reflux occurs often, it may be due to one of the following food triggers:
1. Fatty, fried foods
If you are an individual who suffers from acid reflux, it is important that you avoid any high fat foods. Fried and fatty foods can be the number one reason why you are experiencing acid reflux continuously. For the most part, eating french fries, bacon, desserts, oily or greasy foods can lead to heartburn, which over time can negatively damage your esophagus due to the high amount of acid found in your stomach.
2. Citrus fruits
Avoid eating foods that are high in citrus is also a great idea to help reduce the amount of acid reflux you may be experiencing. It is highly recommended that many patients lower the intake of citrus fruits like oranges, limes, grapefruit, tomatoes, pineapple, tomato sauce, and salsa. For the most part, these types of foods are highly acidic and can cause frequent acid reflux throughout the entire day.
3. Chocolate
Sad for chocolate lovers, but health experts often recommend avoiding chocolate when you suffer from acid reflux because it contains caffeine, which can act as a stimulant and relax the LES and trigger acid reflux. Sweets containing chocolate are also acidic as well as rich in unhealthy fats, which can cause heartburn and bloating, worsening acid reflux symptoms.
4. Spicy foods
If you’re a fan of spicy chicken wings, it’s no wonder your GERD isn’t improving. Foods prepared using dried or fresh chilis, garlic, and onions are often the source of heartburn and acid reflux because these foods increase stomach acid levels, causing heartburn and burping. If you consume a lot of spicy foods, or those prepared with onions and garlic, cutting down will significantly help your GERD symptoms.
